Meet Dr. Steven R. Crawford
I have spent more than three decades working in higher education, driven by a persistent curiosity about how people learn, how technology changes what is possible, and how we can better prepare for what comes next.
Throughout my career, I have worked at the intersection of learning, technology, innovation, and change. My experience has included online and blended learning, educational technology, faculty development, multimedia, accessibility, artificial intelligence, and emerging approaches to teaching and learning. Although the technologies and challenges have changed considerably over the years, one question has remained at the center of my work:
How can we use what we know today
to create better possibilities for learning tomorrow?
That question eventually led me more deeply into futures thinking and foresight.
Looking Beyond What Comes Next
I am a futurist focused on exploring the signals and drivers that are shaping the future of learning and higher education. I am certified in Foresight Essentials by the Institute for the Future, and I use futures thinking as a way to help people move beyond simply predicting what will happen next.
For me, foresight is about possibilities.
It means noticing signals of change, examining the forces influencing them, questioning assumptions about the future, and considering multiple plausible futures rather than assuming there is only one path forward. Most importantly, it means asking what we can do today to help shape the futures we would like to see.
That perspective increasingly influences how I approach educational technology, online learning, faculty development, leadership, strategic planning, and innovation.
Connecting Ideas
Much of my work involves bringing together ideas that are often discussed separately.
Technology affects how students access learning. Changes in student expectations influence course design. Artificial intelligence raises questions about teaching, assessment, creativity, and the nature of knowledge. Accessibility can move beyond compliance to become a fundamental principle of good design. Social, economic, technological, and cultural changes occurring outside education eventually find their way into our classrooms.
Understanding those connections is where things become interesting.
I think of this as the nexus: the place where different ideas, perspectives, experiences, and signals interact. When we bring them together, we can see patterns that might otherwise remain hidden—and begin imagining possibilities that may not have been visible before.
That idea is at the heart of Crawford Creative Nexus.
My Work Today
I currently serve as District Director for the Maricopa Center for Learning and Innovation at the Maricopa Community Colleges District Office. My work supports learning and innovation across Maricopa Community Colleges, including faculty development, educational technology, online learning, accessibility, artificial intelligence literacy, and initiatives exploring the future of teaching and learning.
I also speak and facilitate workshops on topics related to futures thinking, emerging technologies, online learning, educational technology, faculty development, and the changing landscape of higher education.
Whether I am working with faculty, instructional designers, administrators, or other education professionals, my goal is not to tell people what the future will be.
It is to help us become better at noticing change, making connections, exploring possibilities, and deciding what we want to do next.
Beyond Higher Education
Curiosity rarely stays confined to one subject.
Outside my professional work in higher education, I am also interested in storytelling, multimedia, travel, and the craft and history of distilled spirits. Those interests have led to other creative projects and provide another outlet for something that has characterized much of my career: learning deeply about a subject and finding engaging ways to share what I discover with others.
Different paths often lead to unexpected connections.
And that is ultimately what Crawford Creative Nexus represents for me:
Ideas converge. Possibilities expand.
